Gerard J. Sweeney
Founding Partner
Mr. Sweeney has appeared on behalf of the estate fiduciary on real estate transactions; appellate matters; foreclosure and forfeiture proceedings; collection matters; kinship matters; negligence and wrongful death matters; as well as compromise work necessary to resolve said cases.
As the former Law Chairman of the Queens County Democratic Organization, Mr. Sweeney is an expert in Election Law having successfully litigated election cases at the trial court and appellate level.
Mr. Sweeney has lectured on the subject of Election Law and Surrogate's Law for the Queens County Bar Association.

Mindy J. Trepel
Attorney
Mindy J. Trepel, Counsel to the law firm of Sweeney, Reich & Bolz LLP, devotes her practice primarily to Trust and Estates. This includes all aspects of estate administration and legal issues in both contested and uncontested matters. Ms. Trepel also assists the Counsel to the Public Administrator of Queens County in all aspects of the estates handled by the Public Administrator.
She served as a legislative aide to the New York State Assembly in 1981. She was formerly a law assistant to Justice William D. Friedmann. As his law assistant, her duties included legal research and writing, conferencing and assisting in the settlement of cases. In 1984 she became the Principal Law Clerk to the Surrogate of Queens County, Louis D. Laurino. During her tenure in the Surrogate''s Court, her responsibilities included legal research and writing, conferencing estate matters and presiding over various hearings, including those of guardianship and kinship. In 1992, Surrogate Robert L. Nahman appointed her as the Public Administrator of Queens County. She served as Public Administrator for ten years during which time she was responsible for the administration of hundreds of estates annually.
She has lectured at several seminars held by the New York State Bar Association on such practical skills as accountings and obtaining letters of administration and letters testamentary. She has also lectured for the Roman Catholic Diocese of Brooklyn''s annual Wills and Estates Planning Program. Her articles, ""Public Administrator''s Office and the Fiduciary''s Responsibilities"" and ""Wrongful Death Compromises"" have been published in the Queens County Bar Association Bulletin.
Ms. Trepel is a member of the Trusts and Estates Section of the New York State Bar Association and is the representative of the Eleventh (11th ) District on its Executive Committee. She has served as President of the Queens County Chapter of the Woman''s Bar Association of the State of New York and is presently on its Board of Trustees.

John W. Steigler
Attorney
John W. Steigler is an associate at Sweeney, Reich & Bolz, LLP concentrating in the area of Trusts and Estates and Real Estate. This includes all phases of estate administration and legal issues for contested and uncontested estates and the preparation of Wills, Trusts and other estate planning documents.
Mr. Steigler also assists the Counsel to the Public Administrator of Queens County in all aspects of the estates of the Public Administrator, including kinship hearings, real estate (auctions, contracts and closings) and SCPA 1404 examinations.
Mr. Steigler wrote and argued in the New York Appellate Division, Second Department the lead case in New York State regarding inheritance rights of cousins once removed when there are also cousins seeking to inherit, which was published in the New York Law Journal front page as the Decision of the Day. Matter of Shumavon, 260 A.D.2d 140, 701 N.Y.S.2d 441 (1999).
Mr. Steigler has been appointed Guardian Ad litem by the Surrogates of Westchester and Nassau Counties to protect the rights of infants and unknown distributees.
Mr. Steigler has traveled the world extensively on behalf of the Queens County Public Administrator and participated in kinship hearings in England, Paris, Germany, Poland, Estonia, Ukraine, Ireland, Hungary and the Czech Republic.

Christopher Xuereb
Attorney
Christopher Xuereb is an associate at Sweeney, Reich & Bolz, LLP. His practice is concentrated in the areas of Trusts and Estate Administration. Christopher Xuereb's estate work is primarily focused on the administration of estates, contested probate proceedings, discovery proceedings, turnover proceedings and complex contested accounting proceedings in Queens County Surrogate's Court, Jamaica, Queens.
Having worked in the Funeral Home industry in Queens for 8 years prior to becoming an attorney, Mr Xuereb, offers a unique and experienced perspective. This enables him to provide insight and to handle a myriad of circumstances which arise from the moment of the decedent's death and throughout the administration of the estate.
Prior to his work in Estates, Mr. Xuereb worked in the Mortgage Closing department representing both Emigrant and Citibank at real property and cooperative closings and at loan fundings. Christopher Xuereb was also responsible for reviewing all documents for proper compliance and for the approval and disbursement of all checks.

Rashel M. Mehlman

Rashel M. Mehlman is an associate with Sweeney, Reich & Bolz LLP with a primary background in the lender practice field. Ms. Mehlman has over fifteen years of practice as a residential real estate practitioner, handling all aspects of foreclosure actions; including deficiency and surplus money proceedings; loan sales; stipulations of settlement; estate proceedings on the secured creditor''s petition; and contested foreclosure proceedings. Her bankruptcy practice includes representing the secured creditor on Chapter 13, 7 or 11 petitions; closing experience for the lender as financing entity, as REO/seller in foreclosure; transactional background through a certain title agency, title review, and title transfers; said representation covers the major institutional entities, including governmental loans.
Ms. Mehlman''s experience also includes landlord & tenant practice, appearance on holdover and non-payment proceedings; contested landlord/tenant matters; collections disputes; and co-op foreclosures and complicated real estate transactions.
Ms. Mehlman has lectured for the Queens County Bar Association on bankruptcy practices relative to foreclosures and post-foreclosure evictions.
